For anyone that works from home, you all know that a well curated workspace is essential to getting any real work done at home. Creating the perfect space is a tedious process, but a very rewarding one. While comfort is essential in any office-space, an office that is too casual may impede your ability to get things done. You need a way to separate yourself from the rest of the interactions in the home and to convey a sense of ‘off limits’ to all other normal home sounds and distractions.

If you don’t have a room to devote to your at home office, even a small corner can be a productive area. Once you claim it as your office space, it’s vital that you commit to it. Trying to make your desk double as a vanity area or eating space isn’t beneficial for productivity. Even if it’s the smallest area in your apartment or bedroom, it needs to be strictly for work.

Finding the correct desk, chair, and shelving is really important. If you’re on a budget, you can find affordable desks at IKEA, but I recommend saving up on a good office chair. You may have to spend hours on end in this chair and a regular table chair just won’t do.

Speed and efficiency are very critical at home. But make careful decisions, question whether that large color copier is a real necessity or if a trip to the neighborhood Staples will suffice. Don’t pay for equipment you won’t use on a daily basis.

I always prefer a neutral palette, so naturally my desk reflects that. If bright colors get your creativity flowing, incorporate vivid hues into your space. Color is a large part of how our minds work so be sure that your decor sets the ideal environment for you.

Finishing off your workspace with an inspiring quote or piece of artwork is optional but I recommend it. I would suggest against hanging a mirror over your desk, I’ve done this in the past and it’s a total distraction.

Good lighting is essential in any aspect of life. Ideally you want as much natural daylight as possible; if your space has a window, it will enhance the lighting. Daylight is the most evenly balanced source of white light available, in that sunlight has an approximately equal proportion of each color of the spectrum.

A tidy workspace is a necessity so storage solutions are a must. IKEA has very inexpensive storage boxes for important papers and supplies. Try to keep as much off of your desk as possible, leaving only what you need within arms reach.
